Web Bridge โ€” Domain, Search & Social Connections

Use this area to prepare Veteran Front Door for a real domain, save external website connections, launch web searches, and connect your Facebook page link.

Important: This browser prototype can save links, open provider setup pages, and prepare your connection settings. A real custom domain or Facebook login connection must be completed through your hosting/domain provider or a secure OAuth backend.

๐ŸŒ Connect My Domain

No domain saved yet.
  1. Publish Veteran Front Door to an HTTPS hosting provider.
  2. Add your custom domain inside that provider.
  3. Update DNS records at your domain registrar using the exact values your host gives you.
  4. Wait for HTTPS/SSL to become active.
  5. Return here and save the live domain.

Conditions Veterans May Overlook

๐Ÿฆถ Foot Injuries & Pain โ€” Veteran Guide

Learn what symptoms, functional limits, evidence, secondary conditions, and rating rules may matter when a service-connected foot injury is evaluated.

Common military-related causes

  • Running, marching, and physical training
  • Heavy-load marches
  • Jumping or airborne operations
  • Falls, twists, trips, or crush injuries
  • Vehicle accidents or impact
  • Repetitive overuse
  • Long periods standing or walking on hard surfaces
  • Combat-related injury or blast exposure
  • Improper or ill-fitting footwear
  • Shipboard or confined-space duties

Symptoms worth documenting

  • Pain on the top, bottom, side, or heel
  • Swelling or tenderness
  • Numbness or tingling
  • Weakness
  • Stiffness or reduced motion
  • Difficulty walking or standing
  • Pain with running, jumping, or stairs
  • Flare-ups after increased activity
  • Difficulty with balance or uneven ground
  • Calluses, bruising, or changes in foot shape
  • Fatigue and pain after activity

38 C.F.R. ยง 4.71a โ€” Diagnostic Code 5284

โ€œOther foot injuriesโ€ may be evaluated under DC 5284 when a more specific diagnostic code is not more appropriate.

LevelSchedule
10%Moderate foot injury
20%Moderately severe foot injury
30%Severe foot injury
40%Actual loss of use of the foot, under the note to DC 5284

Important: many foot disorders have their own diagnostic codes. VA decides which code applies based on the diagnosed condition and evidence.

Evidence that can support the claim

  • Service treatment records and sick-call reports
  • Your own statement describing when symptoms began and how they continue
  • Buddy or witness statements
  • Medical records and imaging such as X-rays, MRI, or CT
  • Physical therapy records and treatment notes
  • Orthopedic or podiatry evaluations
  • Footwear, insole, brace, or boot records
  • Photos showing swelling, bruising, or injury
  • Work-impact statements and daily-life limitations
  • Medical evidence explaining how the injury affects function

Possible secondary conditions

A service-connected foot disability may sometimes cause or aggravate another disability. Examples that may need medical evidence include:

  • Knee problems related to altered gait
  • Ankle problems related to instability or limited motion
  • Hip problems related to altered gait or weight distribution
  • Low-back problems related to altered mechanics
  • Nerve symptoms such as numbness, tingling, shooting pain, or weakness

38 C.F.R. ยง 3.310: secondary service connection can apply when a service-connected disability causes or aggravates another disability. A medical link and the facts of the individual case matter.

What may happen at a Foot C&P exam

  • Review of your claims file and medical history
  • Questions about how and when the injury happened
  • Physical examination of the feet
  • Range-of-motion or functional testing when appropriate
  • Questions about pain with use and repeated activity
  • Gait and weight-bearing observations
  • Imaging if medically indicated
  • Questions about work and everyday functional impact

Describe your symptoms accurately and consistently, including how flare-ups affect walking, standing, work, sleep, and daily activities.

During flare-ups, write down

  • How often flare-ups happen
  • How long they last
  • Whether pain, swelling, or numbness increases
  • Whether you limp or need to sit or rest
  • Whether you need help with daily activities
  • How far you can walk or how long you can stand
  • Whether stairs or uneven ground are difficult
  • Whether symptoms interfere with sleep or work

Other rating principles

  • 38 C.F.R. ยง 4.3: reasonable doubt is resolved in the Veteran's favor when the evidence is approximately balanced.
  • 38 C.F.R. ยง 4.7: when a disability picture more nearly approximates the criteria for the higher of two evaluations, the higher evaluation may be assigned.
  • 38 C.F.R. ยง 4.10: evaluations consider functional impairment and the effect on ordinary activity.

Why foot injuries may continue for years

Military foot injuries do not always fully resolve. Persistent pain, swelling, weakness, reduced endurance, altered walking, and limited function can continue long after the original event.

Important: report what you actually experience and how it affects function. The VA rating depends on the diagnosed condition, applicable diagnostic code, and evidenceโ€”not simply the presence of pain.

Document the service connection story

  • When and where the foot injury or symptoms began
  • What military duty, accident, training, footwear, fall, impact, or overuse was involved
  • Whether symptoms continued after service
  • What treatment you received in service and afterward
  • How symptoms changed over time
  • How the condition affects walking, standing, stairs, exercise, work, and daily life

If early records are limited, other evidence may still matter, including competent lay statements, buddy statements, later medical records, and consistent history. The VA decides the weight of all evidence.

Nerve problems may be evaluated separately

If a foot condition produces a distinct neurologic disabilityโ€”such as numbness, tingling, burning, shooting pain, sensory loss, or weaknessโ€”the neurologic component may require evaluation under the VA neurological rating schedule in 38 C.F.R. ยง 4.124a.

A separate rating is not automatic. VA must determine the diagnosed nerve condition, severity, relationship to service or another service-connected disability, and whether a separate evaluation is allowed without rating the same manifestation twice.

Other conditions that may affect the feet

  • Knee conditions: altered gait may change stress through the feet and lower extremities.
  • Ankle conditions: instability or limited motion can change foot mechanics.
  • Hip conditions: altered gait or weight distribution can affect lower-extremity mechanics.
  • Low-back conditions: some neurologic conditions can produce symptoms into the feet.
  • Diabetes mellitus: may cause peripheral neuropathy and foot symptoms; service connection depends on the facts of the individual case.
  • Other service-connected disabilities: may cause or aggravate another condition when supported by competent evidence.

Secondary service connection: see 38 C.F.R. ยง 3.310. Medical evidence may be important in showing causation or aggravation.

Evidence checklist

  • โ˜‘ Service treatment records and sick-call reports
  • โ˜‘ Personal statement / lay statement
  • โ˜‘ Buddy statements
  • โ˜‘ Current medical records
  • โ˜‘ X-rays, MRI, CT, or other imaging when available
  • โ˜‘ Physical therapy records
  • โ˜‘ Orthopedic or podiatry evaluations
  • โ˜‘ Medical opinions when needed
  • โ˜‘ Shoe, insert, brace, or boot records
  • โ˜‘ Photos of swelling, bruising, deformity, or visible injury
  • โ˜‘ Work-impact statements
  • โ˜‘ Daily-life limitations
  • โ˜‘ Evidence showing how symptoms affect function

What to describe at a C&P exam

  • Where the pain is located
  • How often symptoms occur
  • What makes symptoms worse
  • How long flare-ups last
  • Swelling, weakness, numbness, tingling, or instability
  • How far you can walk
  • How long you can stand
  • Whether you limp or need to rest
  • Whether you use braces, insoles, boots, cane, or other assistive devices
  • How the condition affects work and ordinary daily activities

Be accurate and consistent. Do not exaggerate symptoms and do not minimize them.

Don't forget

  • Describe all symptoms and functional limitations accurately.
  • Explain how the condition affects everyday life and work.
  • Describe flare-up frequency, duration, and severity.
  • Keep copies of important records and evidence.
  • Check VA.gov for claim and decision updates.
  • Use the official VA site or an accredited representative when filing or appealing.

Your rights under the rating rules

  • 38 C.F.R. ยง 4.3 โ€” Reasonable doubt: when the evidence regarding a material issue is approximately balanced, reasonable doubt is resolved in the claimant's favor.
  • 38 C.F.R. ยง 4.7 โ€” Higher of two evaluations: if the disability picture more nearly approximates the criteria for the higher evaluation, the higher evaluation is assigned.
  • 38 C.F.R. ยง 4.10 โ€” Functional impairment: evaluation considers the effect of disability on ordinary activity and usefulness in daily life.
Educational information only. This guide does not diagnose a foot condition, determine service connection, guarantee a separate rating, or predict a VA rating. VA applies the law, rating schedule, anti-pyramiding rules, medical evidence, and the facts of each individual claim. Information on this page should be checked against the current official VA and eCFR sources before filing or appealing.

Compiled from the guides you provided. The ranges below are examples from those graphics, not a guarantee of the current VA evaluation. Search by name or symptom.

Strong claim basics: current diagnosis, link/nexus to service when required, documented symptoms, functional impact, and strong medical evidence. Exact rules depend on the diagnostic code and the facts of the individual claim.

VA Rating Lab โ€” See the Percentage Move

This interactive tool lets you move a mental-health example up or down the published 0%, 10%, 30%, 50%, 70%, and 100% levels, then add or remove other disability percentages to see how VA combined-rating math changes the total.

Educational simulator: This does not diagnose a condition, predict a claim, or assign a VA rating. VA decides ratings from the evidence and applicable law. The mental-health levels shown here summarize the current General Rating Formula for Mental Disorders in 38 C.F.R. ยง 4.130.

Free Information Policy โ€” Please Read

Everything on Veteran Front Door is FREE

Every page, every guide, and every link on this site is free. You will never be charged for information here โ€” not today, not ever. If anyone ever asks you to pay for what is on this site, it is not us.

What this place is

Veteran Front Door takes free, public information that already belongs to the people โ€” from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA.gov), other government agencies, and nonprofit veteran organizations โ€” and brings it together under one roof, in one place, in plain words, so it is easy to find and easy to follow. We did not create the benefits. We simply gathered what is already free and put it in order, to share with people.

We are not the VA

Veteran Front Door is an independent platform, built and run by Terrell Powell and Open Collaboration. This is not a government website. We are not part of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, and the VA does not run or endorse this site. When a page here sends you to an official form or application, it sends you to the government's own website so you can finish it there.

Filing is always free

Applying for VA benefits costs nothing. The VA's own rule is plain: no one may charge you a fee for help with an initial claim. If somebody wants money to file your first claim, walk away and call the VA at 1-800-827-1000.

Information, not representation

What you find here is general information and help finding your way. It is not legal advice, and we are not your representative on any claim. Federal law says only people the VA has accredited may represent a veteran on a claim: accredited veterans service organization (VSO) representatives, claims agents, and attorneys (38 U.S.C. ยงยง 5901โ€“5905; 38 C.F.R. ยง 14.629). That help is free from VSOs like the DAV, the VFW, and The American Legion โ€” and this site will point you to them.

The law this information stands on

VA benefits are governed by Title 38 of the United States Code and Title 38 of the Code of Federal Regulations. Those books โ€” and VA.gov โ€” are the final word. If anything on this site ever differs from the official source, the official source is right, and we want to know so we can fix it.

Government information itself is public: works of the United States Government are not protected by copyright (17 U.S.C. ยง 105). That is why this free public information can lawfully be gathered in one place and shared with you here, free.

Kept honest and current

Benefits rules change. We work to keep this site correct and up to date, but before you act on anything here, confirm it at VA.gov or by calling the VA at 1-800-827-1000. If you are in crisis, call or text 988 and press 1 โ€” the Veterans Crisis Line is free, day and night.

One front door. Everything behind it is free.
